Sam waters the new garden bed
We spent the weekend putting in a raised bed, 4×8, and then filled it with a mixture of topsoil, potting soil, manure and our friends the Zmicks’ fabulous homemade compost. Today Sam and I planted lettuce–Bibb and Black Seeded Simpson–a repeat of last spring. Last spring the seeds germinated in 11 days. What will happen with August plantings?

Sam predicts 11 days, same as the spring. We’ll see. It was pretty hot today– high 80s.

Today we opened the flower press and saw our pressed flowers. They were very pretty. My favorite was the dandelion.

We took a walk in the woods to get some more flowers for our press. We found violets, mustard, azaleas, redbud and many violets. We also found lots of flowers we didn’t know the names of.
